In the midst of the transition to electric cars, Stellantis<\/a> seems to be reviewing its powertrain priorities. After several years of decline for diesel engines in Europe, Rumors are circulating about a possible return of this technology, but this time in a hybrid version. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Diesel: a technology still in demand<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Despite the growing popularity of electric motors, diesel engines are still popular, especially for long-distance travel. <\/strong>In Europe, an estimated 1.3 million vehicles are still fitted with diesel engines, a proportion that remains significant in markets such as commercial vehicles and premium SUVs. Heavy-duty drivers, in particular, continue to prefer this technology for its fuel efficiency and relatively low running costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this context, Stellantis hasn't totally abandoned the idea of diesel.<\/strong> In accordance with to the latest rumors<\/a>in early 2025, the Group has confirmed the relaunch of diesel engine production,<\/strong> particularly for models such as the Citro\u00ebn C5 Aircross and Peugeot 308. These engines will be equipped with the latest Euro 7 standards, which impose strict requirements on pollutant emissions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hybrid diesel: the technology of the future?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

That's where the new rumor that has surfaced in recent weeks comes in. According to several sources, Stellantis could consider relaunching not only traditional diesel engines, but also a hybrid version of these engines.<\/strong> Unlike conventional diesel engines, the diesel hybrid combines a diesel-powered internal combustion engine with an electric motor, reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions while delivering enhanced performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Should this option be confirmed, it would mark a turning point for Stellantis, which, unlike some of its competitors, has no diesel hybrid engines in its range.German competitors such as BMW, Audi and Mercedes.<\/strong> The latter have already successfully launched hybrid diesel models, notably on SUVs and top-of-the-range cars. UPDATE: In the past, PSA has introduced Hybrid4 diesel engines for the 3008, 508 and DS5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why a hybrid diesel engine?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The case for a hybrid diesel engine seems pretty clear. On the one hand, it would enable Stellantis to meet the stringent requirements of European emissions regulations, while at the same time offering an alternative to the diesel engine. for customers who do not yet have access to a sufficient recharging infrastructure for 100 % electric vehicles.<\/strong> On the other hand, a diesel hybrid engine could particularly appeal to customers of SUVs and top-of-the-range sedans, segments in which the Stellantis Group wishes to strengthen its position, particularly with its Alfa Romeo brands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
