Since its launch in 2020, the new-generation electric 500, based on Stellantis' STLA City platform, was initially a great success, supported by purchase incentives in France and Germany. However, when these incentives disappeared, sales dropped significantly. According to our figures, the 500 saw registrations fall from 65,000 in 2023 to just 30,000 in 2024, a decline mainly due to its price, deemed too high by many consumers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To counter this drop in sales, Fiat<\/a> decided in the spring of 2024 to relaunch its flagship model with a hybrid combustion version. However, Fiat is not denying its 100 % electric version, which it considers to be the most suitable for the model. Indeed, it is, Almost a year ago, Stellantis announced an investment of 100 million euros.<\/a> to improve the 500 electric vehicle, with the aim of increasing its range and making it more competitively priced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Until now, very little official information had been circulating about this upgrade, apart from some speculation about a new battery. It was also widely expected that the new version of the electric 500 would be launched in November 2025, at the same time as the hybrid version. But an unexpected revelation came to light during our interview with Guillaume Clerc, Head of Product at Fiat and Abarth.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this interview, we were able to obtain exclusive information about the new electric Fiat 500. While this project remains deliberately vague and difficult for Fiat to discuss, some details did emerge. The main investment is in a new battery, which will be produced by the new Stellantis\/CATL joint venture<\/a> in the new Spanish plant.<\/strong> This battery will be of the LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) type. As a reminder, the current battery comes from Samsung SDI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What's intriguing, however, is the production date for this battery. It was announced in a press release that the Spanish plant Stellantis\/CATL, which will also produce for Opel and Peugeot, will only start manufacturing these new batteries at the end of 2026.<\/strong> Although Guillaume Clerc would not give an exact release date for the new electric Fiat 500, he confirmed that this version will not arrive at the same time as the hybrid version,<\/strong> contrary to what had previously been speculated in numerous media (including italpassion). Fiat has never communicated on a simultaneous launch. While Mr. Clerc declined to give a precise date, this electric version will logically not be launched before the end of 2026, or even early 2027. This information is in line with the Fiat product plan we unveiled a year ago<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Clerc has confirmed that the new 500 hybrid will aim to boost production at the Mirafiori plant, and at the same time amortize the cost of developing the new 500 electric. If you've been waiting for a more affordable electric Fiat 500 with improved range by the end of 2025, you'll have to be patient.
