Alfa Romeo is going through a difficult 2024. After a third quarter at half-mast<\/a>With overall sales down 13 % in its main markets - Italy, USA, France, Germany and Spain - the Italian brand is struggling to revive its volumes. But the latest model could reverse the trend: the Junior.<\/strong> This small SUV saves volumes, particularly in Italy and France, where it generates almost 50 % of sales.<\/strong> However, the question remains Is it Junior that is cannibalizing Tonale sales, or has Tonale become obsolete in certain markets?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Partial recovery thanks to Junior<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

According to our figures, compared to the year 2023, Alfa Romeo sales down 10.52 % from January to November 2024<\/strong> in the five major countries where the brand is most present. But there is a light at the end of the tunnel. The Junior, launched this year, has led to some recovery, particularly in Italy, where it has boosted local sales (see our article Alfa Romeo Junior: flop or success in Italy<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indeed, without Junior, Alfa Romeo would have seen its figures plummet even further<\/strong>. In Italy, its star market, the brand posted a year-on-year decline of 13.81 % in November 2024, but with Junior, which accounts for almost half of sales<\/strong>the decline would have been more pronounced. In France, Junior is also driving sales, with growth of 7.5 %<\/strong> compared with 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Contrasting figures by market<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Italy, home of Alfa Romeo, is lagging behind, with registrations down 13 % in November 2024, despite the Junior's success. In the United States, the situation is similar, with a drop of 14.09 1TP3Q<\/strong>. Perhaps the Tonale price cuts in Uncle Sam's country<\/a> can also reverse the trend. These disappointing results highlight Alfa Romeo's dependence on its existing models, particularly the Tonale,<\/strong> which until now seemed to be the key element in the brand's relaunch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the contrary, France and Germany show more positive performances<\/strong>. In France, sales rose by 7 % thanks to the popularity of the Junior, while in Germany, results remained stable. In Spain, the brand recorded a slight drop of 5.2 %, but here again, the Junior is helping to maintain a certain presence in this market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Tonale, a model on its last legs?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Tonale was presented as the brand's flagship model for relaunch in 2022. However, November 2024 figures reveal that it's no longer enough to keep Alfa Romeo sales afloat<\/strong>. In Italy, the Tonale has lost ground, while the Junior has become the main attraction. The Tonale, whose sales had begun to take off, now seems to be in trouble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The question of Whether Junior is cannibalizing Tonale sales remains to be seen.<\/strong> With nearly 50 % of sales in Italy and France, it's clear that the Junior is capturing a large share of consumer attention. And if the Tonale can't keep up, it could mean that the market has already moved on. All the more so since Alfa Romeo's overall sales show that the brand is no longer growing in terms of volume, even with the rise of Junior.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

More will be needed to boost sales in 2025<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

While Alfa Romeo manages to limit the damage caused by Junior, it is clear that the brand is unable to regain the momentum needed to grow in terms of volume<\/strong>. Declining sales of the Tonale and the rise of the Junior raise questions about the future of existing models. A new Stelvio to be presented in 2025<\/a>However, by the time it is actually launched on the market, it will have an impact on registration figures in 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In short, 2024 shows Alfa Romeo in transition.
