Stellantis: North America, Europe, Brazil... where are the group's 249,000 employees?

Since its creation in 2021, Stellantis has embarked on an extensive policy of reducing its payroll. At the time of the merger between PSA and FCA, the Group had 281,000 employees worldwide. Three years later, the balance sheet is clear: 263,000 employees in 2022, 250,000 in 2023, and by 2024, Stellantis reports a workforce of 248,800. The steady decline seems to have stopped.

A breakdown by region shows that Europe remains Stellantis' main base by far, with 126,800 employees in 2024, including almost 40,000 in France and 38,600 in Italy. The balance between these two historic countries remains intact.

In North America (United States, Canada, Mexico), Stellantis employs 75,500 people, including around 50,000 in the United States alone. In fact, it is on this continent that the reduction has been greatest, from 89,000 employees in 2021 to 75,500 in 2024.

South America, on the other hand, shows significant growth, with 32,600 employees, including 27,000 in Brazil. Similarly, in Africa, China and India, Stellantis has strengthened its workforce, particularly in Africa, where the number of employees has risen from 5,600 to 7,800 in three years.

Note: unlike previous reports, Stellantis no longer details the category "Maserati employees" or "other employees". These seem to have been reallocated to the various regions, which explains the local increase without any major change in the total.

Interestingly, the USA, France, Italy and Brazil account for 156,000 of the Group's 248,800 employees, making Stellantis a global, multicultural automotive group. Another interesting point is that while Europe accounts for 51 % of the Group's employees, it represents only 39 % of revenues. Conversely, North America accounts for 30 % of Group employees, yet 42 % of revenues. In South America, the situation is much more balanced, with 13 % of employees for 11 % of revenues.

Employees vs. revenues by region

All in all, between 2021 and 2024, Stellantis reduced its overall headcount by -11.5 %, sales decreased in volume by -17 % and sales increased by 3 %. With a change of CEO expected in the next few weeks, it will be interesting to see what human resources policy will be adopted for the next few years: lasting stabilization or a new phase of adjustments?
