After several months of speculation and successive announcements, Maserati has officially confirmed what many had been anticipating: the GranTurismo and GranCabrio models will return to Modena. A return to their roots for these two brand icons, who will soon have the honor of being produced at the historic Viale Ciro Menotti plant, where the first generations of these models were born.

Back to our roots

We announced this 2 months agoand now it's official. The move of Maserati GranTurismo and GranCabrio production to the Modena plant marks a strategic turning point for the Trident brand. Indeed, these prestige vehicles are no longer mass-produced, and require a production environment more suited to their exclusivity and high-end image. This is precisely what the Modena plant offers, in addition to the expertise of its team already in charge of the Maserati MC20 supercar.

This change comes after a temporary move to the Mirafiori plant, where the GranTurismo and Grancabrio were produced alongside the electric Fiat 500. However, aligning these iconic models with mass-produced vehicles no longer corresponded to Maserati's aspirations. The relocation to Modena is therefore a logical return, underlining the brand's desire to reinforce its luxury image while guaranteeing production quality.

Why Modena?

The Modena plant, already a production site for models such as the MC20, is the beating heart of Maserati. This is where the brand's DNA comes to life, with a production capacity that is more modest but perfectly suited to the manufacture of prestige cars. This plant is the ideal location for models such as the GranTurismo and Grancabrio, whose annual production must not exceed certain limits to preserve their exclusive character. Maserati's decision to return to Modena for these two models demonstrates a clear desire to focus on the very essence of the brand: luxury, craftsmanship and performance.

An Italian-style production model

Maserati's case is similar to that of Ferrari, which produces all its vehicles at Maranello, or Lamborghini at Sant'Agata Bolognese. These brands have understood that to maintain their image, it is necessary to concentrate production on an emblematic site, thus reinforcing their identity and optimizing their capacities, while reducing the costs associated with dispersed manufacturing processes.

Of course, this begs the question: why not make Modena the exclusive production site for all Maserati models in the future? This hypothesis seems more than likely, given recent statements and the reduction in production volumes at other plants, such as Mirafiori, which will now be more dedicated to the production of Fiat models.

A new era for Maserati production

The relocation of the GranTurismo and GranCabrio to Modena marks a new stage in Maserati's strategy, a symbolic gesture for the brand, but also a very pragmatic choice. Production is scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2025, and this could well be the start of a new era for Maserati. The Modena plant is likely to become the nerve center for the production of Maserati's top-of-the-range models, while integrating more and more models to come in the near future. We expect more information in a few weeksas announced by the CEO of Stellantis Europe.
