The return of the Fiat Ulysse thanks to Citroën's new SUV?

Citroën has just unveiled the new generation of its family SUV, the C5 Aircross. A redesigned model, more modern, spacious and, above all, offered with a 100 % electric motor (but also hybrid and rechargeable hybrid) promising up to 680 km of range. An announcement that inevitably raises the question: Fiat will it offer an equivalent in its own range?

Stellantis synergies already well established

It wouldn't be the first time. Since the creation of Stellantis, Fiat and Citroën have multiplied their joint projects. The best example is of course the Citroën AMI (2.41 m) and its cousin the Fiat Topolino (2.53 m), two electric micro-city cars with essentially aesthetic differences. More recently, the link is even more visible with the Citroën C3 (4.01 m) / Fiat Grande Panda (3.99 m) duo, or the future Citroën C3 Aircross (4.39 m) and the Fiat model that could be called Giga-Panda, awaiting official presentation.

Citroën C5 Aircross (4.65 m)?

In all these cases, the strategy is clear: share platforms, rationalize costs, adapt design to each brand. This industrial logic enables Fiat to renew its range at a lower cost while asserting its identity.

And for the C5 Aircross, is a Fiat version planned?

The new Citroën C5 Aircross, 4.65 meters long, is the top of the range SUV from the manufacturer with the chevrons. This places it above the future Giga-Panda in the Stellantis range. A vehicle of this size would therefore have a place in the Fiat range, which currently doesn't offer such a large SUV in Europe. Can you imagine a large Fiat SUV on the same technical basis as the new C5 Aircross?

For the moment, there is no official information in this regard. Fiat has not announced any such model in the its roadmap to 2030. It has to be said that the Italian brand first needs to consolidate the launch of its key new models: the Grande Panda, the Giga-Panda, but also others to come such as the Fastback or the pickup/camper.

A hypothesis that remains open

Nevertheless, the possibility of a Fiat cousin to the C5 Aircross cannot be ruled out in the medium term. History shows that Fiat has already rebadged large Citroën/Peugeot vehicles, as was the case with the the Fiat Ulysse family model, a clone of the Peugeot 807 and Citroën C8. If the new Panda models prove successful, Fiat may be tempted to return to the large SUV or family MPV segment with a vehicle derived from the C5 Aircross. If so, the return of this model under the Ulysse name is unlikely, as it is currently used for a 4.9 m Fiat utility vehicle.

First-generation Fiat Ulysse

Today, no large Fiat SUV derived from the Citroën C5 Aircross has been announced. But given the many synergies within Stellantis, it would not be surprising if this idea were considered in the future. All will depend on the success of the new Fiat range and the evolution of demand for large electric SUVs in Europe. To be continued...
