Based on the Fiat Ducato, Italian coachbuilder Caselani aims to revive a 60s icon

Sometimes all it takes is a well-inspired pencil stroke to transform a modern utility vehicle into an object of desire. Italian coachbuilder Caselani, already famous for its reinterpretation of the Citroën Type H and the 2CV minivan, is now tackling Fiat with a nostalgic project: the Caselani 616N, based on the Fiat Ducato.

Tribute to the Fiat 615 and 616 of the 1950s and 60s

Between 1952 and 1966, the Fiat 615 and 616 accompanied Italy's post-war economic boom. Versatile work vehicles, they were used as much to transport foodstuffs as to support the industrial boom. Their rounded silhouette, with its round headlights and aviation-inspired volumes, is remembered as the symbol of a rebuilding Italy.

It's precisely this spirit that Caselani wanted to revive. Designer David Obendorfer, a specialist in retro reinterpretations, has synthesized the stylistic codes of these iconic models: a bean-shaped grille, flowing ribs on the flanks, a short hood and soft lines reminiscent of the SUVs of the 50s and 60s.

When nostalgia rhymes with modernity

Beneath this neo-retro costume, the Caselani 616N remains a latest-generation Fiat Ducato, launched at the end of 2023. It features modern engines, with the 2.2 Multijet turbodiesel available in 120, 140 and 180 hp versions, as well as the option of the 268 hp E-Ducato 100 % electric with 110 kWh battery. The perfect combination of vintage charm and modern technology.

The conversion, carried out directly in the Caselani workshops in northern Italy, takes the form of a fiberglass body kit, accompanied by headlamps and accessories supplied by Mopar, Hella or Giantlight. While the cab retains the modularity and ergonomics of the Ducato, the transformed exterior radically changes the perception of the vehicle.

An all-purpose van, available in several variants

Caselani doesn't limit itself to a simple stylistic evocation: the 616N will be available in numerous configurations. From classic utility vans to food trucks, motorhomes, refrigerated vehicles and tow trucks, the kit is aimed at a wide range of customers. To appeal to customization enthusiasts, nine plain colors and three two-tone liveries will be offered.

Two initial creations have already been unveiled: the Randger R550 and R602 motorhomes, equipped with the retro kit, which the public will be able to discover at the Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf (August 29 - September 7, 2025).

With this project, Caselani once again demonstrates its talent for blending nostalgia and utility. After seducing vintage Citroën enthusiasts with his Type H and Type HG, he now tackles a Fiat model steeped in history. And beyond the aesthetic exercise, the 616N is a commercially viable offering, ready to seduce both professionals and enthusiasts of vehicles with a quirky look.
