The story of a legendary Ferrari found in a French barn, and finally sold 50 years later for a record price.

It's one of the most beautiful stories in modern motoring: a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spyder, abandoned for almost half a century in a barn in central France, has been sold at auction for a record 16.3 million euros. This legendary cabriolet, considered the most beautiful of the second half of the 20th century, once belonged to Alain Delon. And its incredible history only adds to its legend.

The forgotten treasure of the Baillon collection

The story begins with Roger Baillon, a French industrialist with a passion for cars who dreamed of creating his own museum. In the 1950s and 60s, he built up a unique collection of prestigious cars. Unfortunately, financial difficulties forced him to put his project on hold. Some cars were sold, others forgotten... and ended up stored in sheds, out of sight and out of mind.

It wasn't until 2014, at the time of a succession, that the Baillon heirs opened the doors to these barns. Inside: over 100 vintage cars, including this Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder, Scaglietti bodywork, with streamlined headlights, one of only 37 produced in this configuration. And above all, in pristine original condition, never restored.

A story worthy of a movie... with Alain Delon

But this Ferrari shines not only for its rarity. It has also enjoyed a life of stardom. Exhibited at the 1961 Paris Motor Show, it was first acquired by actor Gérard Blain, before passing into the hands of his friend Alain Delon in 1963. Delon, at the height of his career at the time, was often photographed driving the car, notably in Los Angeles with his wife Nathalie Delon.

The car even made the trip to California, where it was used for their travels. Moving details, such as the pair of leather gloves left in the glove compartment and the vintage gasoline coupons, were found during the rediscovery.

Historic sale at Artcurial

On February 6, 2015, Artcurial is organizing the auction of the Baillon collection as part of the Rétromobile show. The Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spyder (chassis 2935GT, matching numbers) is the center of attention. Priced between 9.5 and 12 million euros, it finally sold for 16.3 million euros, becoming the most expensive "barn find" in automotive history.

What fascinated collectors? Its exceptional original condition. Unlike many restored models, this one had simply been... forgotten. Protected by stacks of magazines, the bodywork, interior and mechanics were all original. A real leap in time, frozen for over 45 years. Specialists don't hesitate to describe it as the automotive Holy Grail.
