To own a Ferrari F40 is to touch myth. But it also brings us face-to-face with a much more down-to-earth reality: maintenance. A famous German YouTuber has just revealed a minor overhaul costing... €70,000. A figure that may seem excessive, except when you understand what it implies.
€70,000 for a "small inspection"? Yes, but...
In his video, the YouTuber explains that this astronomical rate corresponds to a small inspection including :
- Replacement of both timing belts,
- Changing all fluids,
- And above all, refurbishment of the two fuel tanks on either side of the vehicle.
These tanks are made from an extremely lightweight synthetic material, designed to minimize weight. Problem: over time, this material degrades. Ferrari recommends replacing them every 10 years for safety reasons, because an F40 that smells of petrol is never a good sign.
A problem well known to F40 owners
The double tank is one of the car's most expensive weak points. These are flexible bags, installed at the time to meet the lightness requirements imposed by Enzo Ferrari himself. The problem is that these components age badly: the fabric cracks, fuel vapors escape, and this can lead to fire hazards.
At one time, Ferrari no longer produced these parts: owners were left with an unusable F40, simply due to a lack of available fuel tanks. An absurd situation for a car now worth between €2 and €4 million.
The YouTuber also shares a tip: running the engine with a full tank of fuel before a run helps to check that the tanks are still watertight. Because even if replacement is recommended every 10 years, a new, unused tank stored empty can also have deteriorated.
Maintenance that's off the scale
Beyond this specific example, the maintenance of a Ferrari F40 is worthy of a racing car, which it almost is. 2.9-liter twin-turbo V8 engine, 478 hp, Kevlar and carbon chassis, rigid suspension, unassisted braking system... every part of the car requires specific expertise and very rare parts.
Here are some average F40 maintenance costs:
- Simple annual overhaul: between €3,000 and €7,000,
- Replacement tires (specific Pirelli P-Zero): €2,500,
- Timing belt replacement: €8,000 to €10,000,
- Refurbishment of gearbox or clutch: €15,000 and over,
- Tanks: €15,000 to €20,000 per pair, excluding labor.

The price of legend
The Ferrari F40 was the last model signed by Enzo Ferrari during his lifetime. Produced between 1987 and 1992 in just 1315 examples, it symbolizes the brand's pure DNA: performance, radicalism, brutal beauty.
But this purity comes at a price: complex, costly and indispensable maintenance. Because unlike some modern supercars, the F40 is unforgiving of mechanical neglect. It's a car that lives in a garage, but needs to be driven, and well-maintained, to survive. Like Raul Marchisio's?
