It's a transfer that could go down in the history of the Formula 1 modern. According to exclusive information from the specialist media Autoracer, Audi has just pulled off a major coup by recruiting Wolf Zimmermann, the German engineer who until now has been steering the development of the future Ferrari engine scheduled for 2026. This announcement confirms the great manoeuvres behind the scenes in the run-up to the new technical regulations.

Wolf Zimmermann, eleven years at Ferrari and a key role for 2026

Zimmermann arrived at Maranello more than ten years ago, and was appointed head of the new-generation power unit (engine) project in 2023, the one that was to mark the start of a radically overhauled hybrid era in 2026. Ferrari was counting on his expertise to lead a team in the midst of restructuring, while Frédéric Vasseur had just initiated a series of major organizational changes.

Zimmermann's departure, formalized as a separation by mutual agreement with Ferrari, will take place once the development of the first engine has been finalized. The Scuderia has chosen to entrust the continuation of the project and the future of its engine department to Enrico Gualtieri, now the central figure in the engine project.

Ferrari reorganizes, Audi recruits

This reorganization did not come alone. Ferrari has taken advantage of the end of the Renault program to recruit several engine specialists from Viry-Châtillon, to fill in for internal departures and reinforce Maranello's expertise. A way of consolidating its know-how, while the competition is already preparing its weapons for 2026.

Meanwhile, Audi, which is about to make its official debut in Formula 1, is busy building up a first-rate technical team. Having already attracted attention thanks to the shadow of Mattia Binotto, the German brand is confirming its ambition with the arrival of Zimmermann. But that's not all: the German manufacturer is also reportedly targeting Lars Schmidt, former chief engineer in charge of endothermic development at Ferrari.

Audi has made no secret of its strategy of recruiting people who have worked for Ferrari, the historic F1 benchmark and engine pioneer. The interest shown in Enrico Gualtieri is proof of this, even if he has chosen to remain loyal to Maranello.

As for Zimmermann, he brings to Audi a unique experience: that of having led the Ferrari 2026 engine project from its very beginnings.
