On January 11, 2025, the Maserati MSG Racing scored his first points of the season at the Mexico City ePrixafter a solid performance despite difficult qualifying conditions. For the first time this season, the Italian team was able to turn a starting position into a fine comeback.
Difficult qualifying, but a good trajectory
The weekend of Formula E began under bad auspices for Maserati with qualifications marked by complex tire management. The track, initially damp, quickly dried out, making it more difficult for the drivers. Jake Hughes, one of the team's two drivers, took 16th place on the grid, while his team-mate Stoffel Vandoorne was 13th.
However, both drivers battled brilliantly in the race, optimizing every lap despite the difficult conditions. At the end of the race, Vandoorne climbed back up to 7th place, while Hughes was 10th.. These results, though moderate, were expected given their relatively low starting point.
A positive weekend despite everything
Stoffel Vandoorne, although disappointed not to have been able to reach a podium, expressed his satisfaction by underlining that this performance was probably the best the team could have hoped for in the current circumstances. The Belgian commented that tire management and track conditions had not made things easy, but that the race had been marked by good team spirit and solid management.
José Aznar, Maserati Team Principal, also praised the performance of his drivers, evoking a positive trajectory after a difficult start to the season. He emphasized the importance of optimizing qualifying to hope for better results in the future, while stressing that a place in the points was satisfying after the starting positions.
An encouraging second race
In the end, Maserati left Mexico City with 6 points thanks to Vandoorne's 7th place and 1 point for Jake Hughes, who finished 16th. In the overall standings, the team climbed to 8th position with a total of 8 points. Although still a long way from the leaders, this performance gives Maserati hope for the rest of the season. Porsche remains in the lead with 58 points, followed by McLaren (27 points) and Jaguar (25 points). Maserati still has a long way to go, but the foundations have now been laid for continued progress. See you in Jeddah on February 14, 2025!
