Presented in 2022 as the model destined to relaunch Alfa Romeothe Tonale compact SUV got off to a promising start. Sales held up well in 2022 and 2023, but the momentum quickly faded: 2024 marked a sharp falland in 2025, the Italian brand lives mainly on its small SUV Junior. To stay in the race, the Tonale is about to undergo a facelift. And this facelift promises to be a tough one.
A tougher design
Since the image leak late August 2025 on the Autopareri forum, rumours are rife. One user even used artificial intelligence to merge these visuals with the actual Tonale, producing a strikingly realistic projection. The result leaves little room for doubt: the Tonale's front end will adopt a more aggressive, assertive stance.

The famous Scudetto, already glimpsed in the first leaks, is said to return to a more classic design, with horizontal bars inspired by the Alfa Romeo of yesteryear, such as the 159. Added to this are enlarged air intakes and a bumper directly reminiscent of the styling language inaugurated by the Junior. In short, a blend of tradition and modernity, designed to appeal to historic Alfa enthusiasts and new customers alike.

The Tonale's restyling will not be limited to a reworked body. New wheels are expected, as are new interior ambiences.
Under the hood, the powertrain is also set to evolve. The 160 hp mild-hybrid engine will be increased to 175 hp, thanks in part to a new method of calculating cumulative power. The PHEV version, meanwhile, could benefit from improved efficiency.
Still a strategic model
This restyling comes at a pivotal moment for Alfa Romeo. The initial plan for an electric 100 % range in 2027 has fallen through, and the Tonale must now extend its career to bridge the gap before its replacement, due to be presented at the end of 2026, and which may even change its name.
In the meantime, the restyled Tonale will have the tough task of reviving sales and remaining a key part of the range, alongside the Junior. More aggressive in its design, more polished inside, and sharper on the technical front, it will have to convince once again.
See you in a few weeks for the official presentation. Alfa Romeo has already arranged for us to take it for a test drive: we'll then be able to give you our first impressions of this new Tonale.
It's pretty. He's a lot less clumsy this way.
Yes, I think it's pretty too.
It would just have to be available with the 2.0l 280hp, as in the US.
And it's with a little make-up that they hope to revive this model!
Personally, it's all over for the Tonale. There's no engine that's even remotely sporty that I'd like to see.
What happened to the passion of the "cuore sportivo"?
Without the 280hp 2.0... no interest.
True, but if you look at the malus on the 280 hp Giulia and Stelvio 2.0, it has become a deterrent.
Yes, but the problem is the 2.0 l version
will have no chance of being marketed in France because of this absurd malus, unless offered in hybrid version!
I wonder what percentage of this car is made up of Peugeot/Jeep parts plus I hope it will not have the famous 1.2cc 3cylinder Purtech disaster that comes from Stellantis main brand, Peugeot. Other than becoming a SUV only brand, will Alfa Romeo ever be involved in racing again which is its heritage or just become another Stellantis knock off???
The current Tonale has never convinced me, whereas the Giulia and Stelvio have a timelessly beautiful design. With the restyling, the Tonale will undoubtedly be a little better. The fact remains that even the slightly more powerful engines don't inspire enthusiasm.
Don't really understand the point of restyling a model that's already commercially dead!
I know Alfa has to survive waiting for a real relaunch...but will it come? If it's like Lancia, it's not going to happen...
Sorry but Alfa has not renewed its range with the existing customers ( Giulietta had a lot of customers , a big part is elsewhere now ) and to drag in a top of the range with too slow renewal ( Stelio , Giulia should already be replaced since 1 or 2 years ) .
