New Stelvio pushed back to 2028? Alfa Romeo plans more extensive modifications

At Alfa RomeoOnce again, the calendar waltz seems to be hitting the future Stelvio hard. Initially scheduled for presentation at the end of 2025 and market launch in 2026, a new indiscretion from Italy has upset all plans. According to "Auto Everyeye", the new generation of the Italian SUV would not see the light of day until... 2028.

Just another rumor?

As early as May 2025, we were already reporting serious doubts. on the release schedule for the next Stelvio. At Cassino, where the SUV is to be produced on the STLA Large platform, the signals were already in the red: delays in adapting hybrid powertrains, technical constraints of the LP3 platform designed primarily for the 100 % electric, and pressure from Italian legislation on CO2 emissions. All these factors pointed to a later-than-expected launch.

According to "Auto Everyeye", the release of the Stelvio has now been postponed until after that of the future Giulia and Tonale, now scheduled for 2027. This unexpected turn of events means that the Stelvio is no longer the spearhead of Alfa Romeo's revival, but the final link in a new trio.

Suppliers have reportedly been officially informed of the postponement, and orders for parts cancelled, freezing all SUV-related activity for the next few years. A postponement that seems to have been decided, although not yet officially announced by Alfa Romeo.

Design challenged?

In addition to the timeframe, this leak reveals another major surprise: the Stelvio's design is being revised. Images from patents, in April and confirmed by camouflaged prototypes recently spotted on the snowThe final styling would no longer fit. The styling, apparently considered too lukewarm internally, would be rethought to fit in better with the new stylistic direction the Group wishes to give Alfa Romeo.

A development made possible, indeed encouraged, by the recent change of management at the head of Stellantis. The departure of Carlos Tavares and the arrival of Antonio Filosa at the head of the group would act as an act of major strategic change. The new Stelvio, whose previous vision was partly dictated by the Tavares era, is now subject to a more ambitious reinterpretation, including a full range of combustion, hybrid and electric powertrains from launch.

And a new delay

What will be left of the Alfa Romeo range in 2026 and 2027? If the Giulia and Tonale arrive on schedule, the current Stelvio will have to last another three years on the market, with all the challenges this entails in terms of competitiveness, on-board technology and environmental compliance.

In the meantime, Alfa Romeo will have to contend with increasingly aggressive competition in the premium SUV segment, and with the grumbling of die-hard fans already burned by successive delays to previous models. Let's wait for Alfa Romeo's new product plan for confirmation.

  1. Stellantis would just break your heart! How any of the Italian brands are still operational is beyond me. The Stelvio will be 12 years old before its replaced?

  2. It's a good thing they're reworking the car's overall design, especially the front end, because the patent images weren't very pleasing.
The design was far from Italian and chic, and the car looked more like a bad mix of Lotus Eletre, VinFast and some kind of Chinese car.
Double-decker lights are seen and seen again everywhere.

  3. I was going to say it: this design absolutely needs to be revised, as it doesn't look Alfa Romeo at all! Personally, I just see DS and Peugeot in it!

It looks generalist, not premium, and has virtually no fluidity.

  5. The Tavares era has been nothing but a series of disasters and bad decisions for the Italian brands, simply trying to adapt Peugeot products to the Italian way, with a few design improvements, but engines that are at best pointless (cf. PureTech).
We're paying the consequences, with the totally redesigned Stelvio and other engines, so much the better.
The current Stelvio and Giulia haven't aged a bit, they're still the best in their segments, and all it would take is a slight restyling and a more up-to-date multimedia system to relaunch them, with hybrid engines above all to avoid the malus that makes them almost unmarketable.

    • The design of the Stelvio and Giulia will have to evolve very subtly, because we know how talented some people are at disfiguring successful models... As for the rest, I'm rather relieved. To sell at this price level (excluding the Giulietta and Junior, which must be more affordable), you need exceptional design, an Italian chassis and 100% engines, designed in Milan. At a time when the industry is concentrating, it is necessary to exacerbate the brands' specificities to maintain their legitimacy.

        • True, but in 2016 the front and rear lights should have been redesigned to bring them up to date, the trilobo should have been tweaked slightly (instead of this colored strip) and the dashboard materials and steering wheel should have been improved to take advantage of the Giulia's momentum. But at the time, the management wanted to settle for the minimum.

    • We could simply use the 2 L MHEV currently used on Maserati's Grecale, which isn't selling, while we wait for a high-performance PHEV.

May my good old 166 hold me for a long time to come...and I don't give a damn about on-board technology.
