Introducing the new Alfa Romeo Tonale SUV, and its mission is a very important one!

Three years after its launch, theAlfa Romeo Tonale is already getting a facelift. An unexpected but strategic restyling for the Italian brand, which is seeking to boost sales of its compact SUV in the face of the growing success of the new Alfa Romeo Junior. Officially presented on October 14, 2025, the new Tonale embodies more than ever the sporty, elegant DNA of the Biscione.

Why this restyling is crucial for Alfa Romeo

Launched in 2022, the Tonale was to mark Alfa Romeo's revival in the compact SUV segment. In April 2025, the brand celebrated its 100,000ᵉ production milestone. But since then, figures have plummeted: according to Italian trade unions, production fell by 41 % in the first nine months of 2025, with just 7,930 units assembled. A worrying situation at a time when more than one in two Alfa Romeo models sold today is a Junior.

Pending the still-mysterious future model scheduled for late 2026, this restyled Tonale is intended to reoccupy the compact SUV space and support the Junior to reinvigorate sales. The objective is clear: to enable Alfa Romeo to finally break through the symbolic 100,000 units per year mark, a threshold last reached in 2018.

Sharp design without compromising style

Visually, the Tonale retains its balanced proportions, but gains in presence and muscle. The redesigned, more sculpted front bumper gives the SUV a more expressive look. The new scudetto, now concave and crossed by horizontal bars, evokes the mythical Alfa Romeo of the past while reinforcing the model's identity.

Enlarged air intakes accentuate perceived width, while new three-hole (or three-leaf) "telephone" wheels recall those introduced on the Junior. At the rear, changes are minimal.

New colors to seduce

The color palette has been extended to eight shades, including three new ones:

  • Brera red,
  • Monza green,
  • Ocra yellow,

These new colors join the classic Alfa Black, Alfa White, Vesuvio Gray, Montreal Green and Misano Blue. The black roof, which can be combined with a sunroof, underlines the dynamism of this Italian car.

A more colorful interior at last

This was one of the weak points of the current Tonale: a cabin considered a little dark. Alfa Romeo has rectified this.
The ambience goes up a notch with seats in red or black leather, or in two-tone black/white Alcantara, matched by a dashboard entirely clad in Alcantara.

The cannelloni seats, with coordinated stitching, reinforce the premium touch, while multicolored ambient lighting, inspired by the skin of the Biscione, enhances the interior. The new, more ergonomic central tunnel houses a rotary selector (inaugurated in early 2025), and the emblematic aluminum paddles are still mounted on the steering column.

No tobacco or camel-colored leather yet, but this move upmarket is welcome. It remains to be seen whether this attention to detail extends to the front and rear door trim.

New engines and greater efficiency

Under the hood, the range evolves without revolution. The 1.5 hybrid increases from 160 to 175 hp, thanks to a new calculation combining the power of the combustion engine and the electric motor. The rechargeable hybrid (PHEV) version now boasts 270 hp instead of 280, but is more efficient, according to Alfa Romeo.

Still in the catalog, the 130hp 1.6 diesel remains available for heavy-duty drivers. All engines now meet Euro 6E-bis standards.

Technology: premium at last

The restyled Tonale now features two eagerly awaited technologies:

  • A high-resolution 360° camera with "drone" view, for a complete view of the surrounding area.
  • A semi-automatic parking system, finally available.

There's also a 12.3-inch digital display behind the steering wheel, a 10.25-inch central touchscreen compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto wirelessly, and a 14-speaker Harman Kardon 470 W audio system. Level 2 driving aids (adaptive cruise control, lane keeping, emergency braking, blind spot detection...) confirm the high technological level of the Italian SUV.

And the prices?

Alfa Romeo has not yet announced official prices, but the press release indicates that the entry-level version will be more affordable, while remaining well-equipped. The range is structured around four trim levels: Tonale, Sprint, Ti and Veloce, complemented by a Sport Speciale edition.

A clear mission: to relaunch Alfa Romeo

Since 2019, Alfa Romeo has been sailing between 50,000 and 70,000 sales a year, a far cry from the 130,000 units achieved in 2018. With the Junior - Tonale duo now more coherent and complementary, the brand could once again cross the symbolic 100,000 annual unit mark (or so we hope).

Ambitious indeed, but the restyled Tonale now has the weapons it needs to win back the hearts of Alfisti and appeal to a wider customer base: more assertive design, upgraded interior, enhanced technology... in short, everything it takes for the Italian compact SUV to regain its rightful place in an ultra-competitive segment.

  1. I was afraid, but I think it's one of the best I've seen in a long time! You can tell it's a real Alfa, unlike the Junior, which for me is still the worst of the lot.

  2. And the fact is....no one will care....it'll have a good (for Alfa) initial year of sales and then the decline will kick in..2026 sales for Alfa as a brand I predict will be lower than 2025. I cannot see Alfa being able to stop the rot, Junior will not be able to carry the brand on its own, and Tonale will not help.

  4. The front end is much better, despite the center plate. Inside, it's much the same. It's a shame, though, that the powertrains haven't changed much.

  5. It's a shame they didn't make the 2-liter diesel, because it really works well, and given the Tonale's weight, it would have been a real pleasure to drive.

  7. The rims (thick and striped, why?) are not Alfa Romeo but Abarth. I don't understand why this lack of finesse doesn't add up. If it's for aerodynamics, okay, but if it's for anything else...

The rest is fine, but it's a pity that the visually enlarged front grille to match the Junior is perhaps a little too large.

    • I don't really believe in a tonale v6 because it's at the end of its career... either an exhaust option or a mule from another model with tonale bodywork.

  9. As ugly as ever. This Tonale has weird proportions no matter how you look at it: too narrow, hood too short, etc...
This facelift is unlikely to boost sales.
Alfa would do better to develop the Junior range with other powertrains and a manual gearbox to lower the entry price and thus win back old customers or reach new ones on a tighter budget.

  10. Better than expected, but still too little to boost sales as the change is ultimately subtle.

He keeps his depressed look, the light signatures should have been changed beforehand so that the public would perceive a real novelty.

The two-tone seats are dubious to say the least, and lack quality. As you said, Alexandre, this Tonale would have deserved beautiful beige or even red leather.

The pennants give it a more pronounced sporty identity, while the 3-hole telephone rims are a bit of a curse.

  11. Bof bof I'd say. I don't see how it's going to boost sales... just avoid disappearing. This vehicle is a "dud" with its Jeep base, that's all. That doesn't make it a bad vehicle, just not an Alfa. Finally, like the junior.

  13. I own the Veloce 280 and it's an excellent vehicle. My opinion is that the press has "badly" tested it. Reviews with a long test drive are excellent (top gear, sport-auto ch), reviews with a short test drive are not.
It's a vehicle with many faces (in normal mode, it's a suv like any other), but in dynamic mode, it's definitely an Alfa. The steering is direct and the exhaust note is nice. Finally, there's a video review by an engineer on quattroruote who explains that the chassis has been totally reworked by Alfa, so it's definitely not a jeep anymore!
