He calls his Alfa Romeo 156 «my little Italian lady» and has exceeded 500,000 miles: here's what he had to change on the Fiat engine

At a time when diesel seemed destined for a gradual disappearance in an automotive landscape dominated by electrification, Stellantis may be in for a surprise with the announcement of a new diesel engine. new electrified Euro 7 diesel engine, based on the Italian Multijet architecture. This strategic decision comes at a time of slower-than-expected energy transition. And as an unexpected symbol, at the same time, a Alfa Romeo that's over twenty years old is back in the news. Not for its design, nor for its rarity... but for its endurance.

800,000 km for an Alfa Romeo 156 JTD

On social networks, the Hungarian owner of an Alfa Romeo 156 equipped with the 1.9 JTD 8v engine recently shared a photo that immediately attracted attention: the odometer now shows over 800,000 kilometers.

A remarkable performance for a diesel sedan from the early 2000s. Its owner, Zoltán Zsótér, says he bought this 156 in Milan in 2004. Since then, the car has never been involved in an accident and still retains its original “Bianco Polare” white paintwork. The chassis, he explains, remains in excellent condition despite the years, with only the bodywork having suffered a few marks related to the famous “Italian parking style”.

Used for several winters in Austria, the car has never suffered from major corrosion, thanks to meticulous maintenance based on the regular application of bitumen or wax protection to the underpinnings.

A tried and tested mechanism... but not set in stone

Reaching such a distance was obviously not possible without mechanical intervention. According to the owner, the engine itself only required a turbo, while the transmission received two clutches and a flywheel. The injectors were replaced once, as was the EGR valve. Suspension and wear components were changed over the miles, including two complete sets of wishbones, bearings, shock absorbers and springs. Maintenance has been rigorous, with oil changes performed every 8,000 to 12,000 km, along with regular filter replacement.

But there's more to it than that: the 1.9 JTD engine is still there. Still working. Still capable of taking the car on the road, bend after bend, as its owner humorously points out.

The Multijet symbol at the moment of its return

This testimonial comes at an almost ironic moment in industry news. Faced with the slowdown in sales of electric vehicles and the persistent expectations of heavy-duty drivers, Stellantis is preparing the return of diesel... in a modernized form.

The future 1.6 Multijet Euro 7 engine, combined with lightweight hybridization via the eDCT6 gearbox, should make it possible to combine fuel economy, range and compliance with future environmental standards. A new-generation diesel, conceived no longer as a transitional alternative, but as a sustainable solution in a more realistic energy mix. In this context, seeing an Alfa Romeo 156 reach 800,000 km with one of the first JTD engines takes on a special dimension.

A silent demonstration

Of course, this exceptional longevity depends as much on maintenance as on design. But it reminds us of a truth that the automotive industry seems to be rediscovering today: diesel, when well designed, can be synonymous with durability.

As Stellantis prepares a new era for its electrified internal combustion engines, this 156 continues on its way, almost as a rolling demonstration of what Italian engineering was able to produce at the turn of the century.

  1. Beautiful Alfa Romeo 156 SW, with unusual mileage. Proof that good maintenance is synonymous with longevity.
The Italians can teach the German manufacturers the meaning of the word reliability.
