Italian automotive news is coming to life in the run-up to the prestigious Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este, scheduled for May 23-25, 2025 in Cernobbio, on the shores of Lake Como. And with good reason: A first image of Zagato's mysterious "8C Doppiacoda" project has just been leaked on the Autopareri forum, causing a stir among car design enthusiasts.

A tribute to the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione

Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione 2007

Based on the legendary Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione produced between 2007 and 2010 (limited to 500 coupés and 329 spiders), this new creation appears to be a contemporary interpretation of the coupé by Milanese coachbuilder Zagato. Its name Doppiacoda, or literally "double tail", heralds a particular treatment of the rear end, perhaps inspired by the tapered rear of the AGTZ Twin Tail concept or the 2011 8C Aerodinamica prototype, which never entered production.

A familiar silhouette

The leaked photo shows a model very close to the original 8C design, while introducing a number of significant changes. At the front, the iconic Scudetto is retained, but the air intakes are larger and more angular, and the front lights adopt a sharper design, far removed from the visual softness of the production model.

Organic curves have disappeared in favor of tauter lines, and the door window has been given a sharper treatment, accentuated by a gloss black roof. Some even see this as a nod to the proportions of a Toyota Supra, although the Zagato signature remains evident.

An eagerly-awaited presentation at Villa d'Este

All the indications are that this will be a one-off model, probably based on an unreleased Spider prototype. The rear, still partially concealed in the photo, should justify the name "DoppiaCoda". Under the hood, the 444 hp, naturally-aspirated 4.7-liter V8 from the 8C could be retained.

The official presentation is scheduled for this weekend at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este, a benchmark event for classic cars and exclusive bodywork projects. As usual, Zagato remains discreet about technical specifications and price, but it wouldn't be surprising to see this 8C Doppiacoda top the million euro mark, given its uniqueness and the prestige of its origins.

An 8C... like no other

While some purists may cry sacrilege at the changes made to a design considered untouchable, others will applaud the boldness and determination to revive an icon through an audacious exercise in style, faithful to the tradition of the great Italian coachbuilders.
